A New Class Starter

After my post about “My Favorite” class starters, I’ve recently discovered a great new addition to this list.  I tweeted asking the #MTBoS what their favorite math coaching resources were expecting more coaching type resources.  However, I got a few responses about Fraction Talks.  This would be a great resource for a version of Number Talks for middle school and older students.  If your experience with middle schoolers in anything like mine, you know how much they struggle with fractions (and rational numbers in general).  That number sense is really lacking.  The side offers a great variety of images much like some of those other sites in my list like Estimation 180 and Visual Patterns.  Here’s a few examples.

The site is easy to navigate because of the way it is organized.  There is even a handout offered as a way for students to record their thinking if you would like to go that route.  So check it out and let me know how it goes!  I think I’m going to need to introduce it to my teachers.  They are always looking for ways to help students with fractional thinking.
